Salvation is a topic that is misunderstood by many, misrepresented by some, and is ignored by most. This is tragic since it is the one thing that decides a person’s eternal destiny. God has created man as an eternal being. Physical death is not the end, it is just the beginning of eternity. The question of your salvation determines where you will spend eternity, heaven or hell.
God’s word the Bible explains in simple terms what God reveals about salvation. There are five things that God wants you to know about salvation.
1. You must realize that you are a sinner.
“For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23
We are not sinners because of what we do. We are sinners because of our nature that we inherit from Adam the first man. By Adam sin entered into the world and death along with it. We all share his sin nature and all share in that death.
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” Romans 5:12
2. You must realize that there is a penalty for your sin.
“For the wages of sin is death; …..” Romans 6:23
“The wages of sin”, speaks to the point that we will get what we earned or what we deserve.
“Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? …” 1 Corinthians 6:9
Because we are all sinners by nature; then, we are all unrighteous and therefore none of us shall inherit the kingdom of God. The wages of our unrighteousness is death. This refers to both physical death and eternal spiritual death (separation from God for all eternity in hell).
"And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death." Revelation 20:14
3. God loved you so much that Jesus died for your sins.
“But God commendeth His love towards us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
Because God’s love for us is so great, he provided a means by which we can have salvation. Jesus Christ, the only begotten son of God, died in our place. All of our sins were placed on Jesus when he died on the cross, so that those who trust Jesus as their saviour can be made righteous in God’s sight.
“For he (God) hath made him (Christ) to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21
4. Jesus paid the penalty for your sins. He can give you eternal life. All who call upon Him shall be saved.
“For whosever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13
Salvation is God’s gift to us. This gift is given when we believe in Jesus Christ the Lord.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23
The gift of God is that he offers an exchange; our sins for his righteousness. Jesus, the Son of God, took upon himself our wages of sin, that we deserve, in exchange for internal life in Jesus Christ. We can do nothing to earn salvation. We have to receive it as a gift from God by believing in (having faith in) the completed work of Jesus. This gift of God is given when we have faith in Jesus Christ.
“Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” Galatians 2:16
5. Now is the time to accept Jesus as your Saviour.
“Behold now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” II Corinthians 6:2
Once you take your last breath, it will be too late to accept what Jesus has done for you. We don’t know when that last breath will be, so we need to be ready now.
“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” Hebrews9:27
The moment you take that last breath and die, you then will face God and his judgement. Your fate at that moment of time will be decided based on this question of your salvation. You will face eternal life with God through Jesus Christ because you chose to receive God’s gift, or you will face the wages of your sins and eternity in hell separated for God. The choice is yours.
If you understand that you are a sinner, and that because of your sins you face an eternal death in hell, and that Jesus paid for your sins, and that through Jesus Christ our Lord you can have eternal life instead, then all you need to do is pray and ask the Lord to save you.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:9-10
The key to real eternal salvation is acknowledging Jesus as Lord. This is admitting you are a sinner and repenting (turn from your sin to God). And then, believing that God raised him from the dead. This is believing that God accepted the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for our sins.
If you are truly willing to put your faith in Jesus Christ as your saviour, then pray now. There are no magic words to say or specific prescribed phrases to repeat. Just in your own words with sincerity, confess that you are a sinner and repent of your sins, then ask God to save you and receive Christ as your personal Saviour.
If you have prayed for salvation and truly meant it with all your heart, then you can trust God to keep his word and keep you for all eternity.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”1 Peter 1:3-5
